Wire Wrapped Jewelry

Friday, April 14th, 2006

Wire wrapped jewelry is entirely made by hand and household tools such as pliers. It usually consists of a gem or stone, which is decoratively wrapped with wire made of copper, brass, silver, gold or gold-plated brass.
Techniques of decorative wire wrapping include twisting of the wire, coiling, crimping and shaping the wire to a unique and eye-pleasing form. The wire wrapping is done in such a way as to hold the gym or stone in place and to prevent it from slipping and jiggling during normal wear of the jewelry.

Creating wire wrapped jewelry is done mostly in the home or a small shop, as it does not require any heating or soldering of the wire. It is usually self-taught, but multiple of books are available on the topic for those who are interested in learning. Also, some classes in the creation of wire wrapped jewelry may be held in a local library or church depending on the population of the city and the interest of those in the area. However, these classes may require a small fee for materials used, but the learner always gets to take home their creation at the end of class.
This type of jewelry is mostly sold at small local shops and fairs, as there is not a high demand for it. Most of the time, the jewelry is made for friends upon request or for the creator themselves. Wire wrapping of jewelry is an easy and cheap hobby to get into, and there’s nothing like seeing a close friend wearing wire wrapped jewelry that you created especially for them.
